Sports may be classified differently. Here is a way that can be a basis for the classifications that can be used to categorize a sport.
• Team and Individual – Generally, a sport is classified as an individual sport if it has one or two individuals while it is a ‘team’ if it has 3 or more members in it. Usually, if the winner of a sport is determined by adding the results of individual scores then this is classified as an individual sports.
• Absolute and Relative – Absolute sport means that the outcome solely depends on the athlete himself, and not by the judgment of any judge. On the other hand, relative sport is a kind that depends on someone’s opponent or judgment, much like in a boxing match.
• Automatic and Judgement – From the word itself, automatic sport is one wherein results are automatically given without any form of judgment. Judgement sports are those that require critical decision-making by judges to determine who the winner is.
• External and Human – External sports are those wherein external support is used to win. An example would be car racing where the individual doesn’t give the main effort to win the game. As compared to human sports like running or track and field where people give much energy and effort to win it.
• Physiology and Precision – The difference on these two is in weighing which counts more; having good aiming skills or better functioning body. Running needs good body physiology as compared to bowling which needs good aiming skills.
• Competition and Leisure – Attitude is the main topic here. If one does a sport for the mere sake of having fun then it is for leisure but if one wishes to win a prize, it is classified under competition.
